Ποιος
άνθρωπος στον κόσμο, ιδίως αν πρόκειται για Έλληνα, θα έλεγε όχι σε ένα ταξίδι
στην Κωνσταντινούπολη;

Είναι
μία πόλη γεμάτη αρώματα, γεύσεις, χρώματα και πολλή ιστορία. Σταυροδρόμι
πολιτισμών και πόλη ένωσης της Ευρώπης με την Ασία, καθώς είναι χτισμένη πάνω
και στις δύο ηπείρους, με τον Βόσπορο να είναι το ποτάμι που τις χωρίζει ή που
τις ενώνει θα έλεγε κανείς. Οι Οθωμανοί άλωσαν την Πόλη το 1453 και από τότε το
παγκόσμιο όνομά της έγινε Istanbul, για τους Έλληνες όμως θα παραμένει πάντοτε η
Κωνσταντινούπολη(Constantinople). Είναι η μεγαλύτερη πόλη της Τουρκίας και αποτελεί το
οικονομικό, πολιτιστικό και ιστορικό κέντρο της. Μια πόλη που σου δίνει την
αίσθηση του οικείου, μια πόλη που η αύρα της σε ταξιδεύει σε μέρη μακρινά.

Αν
έρθεις στην ιστορική πρωτεύουσα της Τουρκίας θα περπατήσεις στην πλατεία Taksim και την Istiklal - τον πιο κεντρικό πεζόδρομο – αλλά και θα γευτείς την
τοπική κουζίνα, η οποία αν και έχει πολλά μπαχαρικά είναι πεντανόστιμη. Θα φας
μία φορά την ημέρα τουλάχιστον τοπικά γλυκά, γιατί δε γίνεται να αντισταθείς
και θα αγοράσεις μπαχάρια, λουκούμια, αναμνηστικά και ότι άλλο μπορείς να
φανταστείς σε μία από τις πολλές υπαίθριες αγορές που θα συναντήσεις. Φυσικά,
θα θαυμάσεις από κοντά την Αγιά Σοφιά και άλλα πολλά αξιοθέατα.

Αυτά και άλλα πολλά σε
καλούν και σε περιμένουν σε ένα μοναδικό ταξίδι. Ας γνωρίσουμε λοιπόν, την Πόλη
των πόλεων, την Κωνσταντινούπολη.

Δεν
γίνεται να μην περάσεις μία φορά την ημέρα από αυτή την πλατεία. Όποιο δρόμο
και να πάρεις ή θα ξεκινήσεις ή θα τελειώσεις τις καθημερινές σου αναζητήσεις.
Αποτελεί σημείο αναφοράς της πόλης και είναι η μεγαλύτερη και πιο γνωστή
πλατεία. Περιμετρικά της υπάρχουν διάφορα τοπικά μαγαζιά και από εδώ ξεκινάει η
Istiklal caddesi, ο 1,5 χλμ μήκους πεζόδρομος. Δύο κύρια σημεία είναι, το
μνημείο-σύμβολο της τούρκικης δημοκρατίας προς τιμήν των ανθρώπων που πήραν
μέρος και βοήθησαν στην εδραίωση της σύγχρονης Τουρκίας και το νέο τζαμί, του οποίου
η κατασκευή τελείωσε το 2021.

O πιο πολυσύχναστος πεζόδρομος της πόλης ξεκινάει από την
πλατεία Taksim και
καταλήγει στο λιμάνι. Εδώ θα βρεις τα πάντα. Μαγαζιά για φαγητό, καφέ, ζαχαροπλαστεία,
σουβενίρ αλλά και ανταλλακτήρια χρημάτων. Καλό είναι να γνωρίζεις από πριν την
ισοτιμία τούρκικης λίρας-ευρώ,&nbsp; γιατί δεν
είναι όλα αξιόπιστα και μπορεί να βγεις χαμένος. Επίσης, από εδώ περνάει
καθημερινά ένα από τα παλαιότερα τραμ του κόσμου. Το κόκκινο ρετρό βαγόνι του
τραμ με τους μικρούς λαθρεπιβάτες να κρέμονται στην πίσω μεριά του βαγονιού, διασχίζει
καθημερινά τον πεζόδρομο από το 1875 χτυπώντας το πασίγνωστο καμπανάκι για να
ειδοποιήσει τους πεζούς.

Ακόμη,
θα συναντήσεις σίγουρα κάποιον άντρα ντυμένο στα λευκά να περιστρέφεται και να
χορεύει τον χορό των δερβίσηδων, Ο χορός αυτός είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο οι
πιστοί έρχονται πιο κοντά στο θεό. Περιστρέφονται γύρω από τον εαυτό τους με
την παλάμη του δεξιού χεριού στον ουρανό και του αριστερού στη γη. Είναι
εντυπωσιακό το πόση ώρα μπορούν να περιστρέφονται χωρίς να ζαλίζονται.

Ακόμη,
καθώς περπατάς στους δρόμους της Πόλης θα ακούσεις πολλές φορές στα μεγάφωνα
τον Μουεζίνη, αυτόν που καλεί τους πιστούς για προσευχή. Είναι η ώρα που οι
περισσότεροι σταματούν τις δουλείες τους και προσεύχονται ή κατευθύνονται στα
τζαμιά για να προσευχηθούν. 

Σου
έχουμε όμως και κάτι ακόμα, που για εμάς εκεί κρύβεται η μαγεία κάθε φορά που
βρισκόμαστε σε μια νέα πόλη. Περπάτησε στους κεντρικούς δρόμους αλλά μη διστάσεις
να περιπλανηθείς και στα στενά δρομάκια(σοκάκια όπως λέγονται) της Istiklal. Θα βρεις αμέτρητα μαγαζιά κρυμμένα, ίσως και αδικημένα,
αφού οι τουρίστες δεν τα προτιμούν. Να είσαι βέβαιος όμως, ότι και να χαθείς
σίγουρα θα βρεις κάτι ενδιαφέρον. Εικόνες μακριά από τα τουριστικά μέρη και τον
πολύ θόρυβο είναι αυτές που θα δημιουργήσουν τις αναμνήσεις σου στο ταξίδι και
θα σε κάνουν να αντιληφθείς καλύτερα την κουλτούρα, τον τρόπο ζωής και την
καθημερινότητα των ντόπιων.

Φυσικά
δε γίνεται Κωνσταντινούπολη χωρίς Αγιά Σοφιά. Ο ιστορικός αυτός ναός χτίστηκε
το 537 και παρά τις όποιες κακουχίες(σεισμοί, λεηλασίες και φωτιές) υπάρχει
ακόμα και στέκεται στο ύψος του. Ένας επιβλητικός ναός που ακόμα και σήμερα μνημονεύεται
ο τρόπος κατασκευής του. Ένας ναός που οι Οθωμανοί ζήλεψαν πολύ, γι’ αυτό και
τον μετέτρεψαν σε τζαμί μετά την Άλωση της Πόλης. Γι’ αυτό και προσπάθησαν να χτίσουν
κάτι παρόμοιο ακριβώς απέναντί του, το Μπλε τζαμί. Η Αγιά Σοφιά αποτελεί
μνημείο της Unesco από
το 1985 και λειτουργούσε ως μουσείο έως και το 2020, όταν και αποφασίστηκε η μετατροπή
της ξανά σε τζαμί.

Το
καμάρι των Τούρκων, αυτό που έχτισαν ακριβώς απέναντι από &nbsp;την Αγιά Σοφιά σε μια προσπάθεια απομίμησής
της. Μπλε λόγω του χρώματος του κτιρίου, αποτελεί χώρο λατρείας των πιστών
μουσουλμάνων σε ένα χώρο που εσωτερικά δεν έχει κάποια διακόσμηση. Θα δεις τους
πιστούς να βγάζουν εξωτερικά τα παπούτσια τους, να πλένουν πρόσωπο και πόδια
στον ειδικά διαμορφωμένο χώρο και να κατευθύνονται στο εσωτερικό του ναού όπου
προσεύχονται γονατιστοί στο πάτωμα το οποίο είναι όλο καλυμμένο με μοκέτα. Την
ώρα της προσευχής το τζαμί δεν είναι επισκέψιμο για τους τουρίστες. Δυσάρεστη
ωστόσο εντύπωση μας έκανε η άσχημη μυρωδιά που επικρατούσε στο χώρο από τον
βγάλσιμο των παπουτσιών. 

Το
φαντασμαγορικό παλάτι είναι το πιο εντυπωσιακό ανάκτορο της Τουρκίας καθώς πέρα
από την αρχιτεκτονική του αποτελεί και μία πύλη για τον Βόσπορο. Τόσο το
εσωτερικό του παλατιού με τα 285 δωμάτια, 46 χωλ, 6 χαμάμ, 68 μπάνια όσο και το
εξωτερικό με τους πολύ προσεγμένους κήπους του είναι αυτά που θα σε
εντυπωσιάσουν. Το παλάτι αποτέλεσε κατοικία των σουλτάνων της οθωμανικής
αυτοκρατορίας και είναι ένα πραγματικό στολίδι που σε καλεί να το ανακαλύψεις.

Βρίσκεται
σε μια περιοχή με έντονη ζωή λόγω και των πολλών μαγαζιών που υπάρχουν τριγύρω.
Είναι ένα εντυπωσιακό αξιοθέατο, κοντά στο λιμάνι, ορατό από πολλά σημεία που
όσο νυχτώνει γίνεται &nbsp;όλο και πιο όμορφο.
Αν καταφέρεις και ανέβεις μέχρι την κορυφή διότι η ουρά αναμονής είναι τεράστια
θα απολαύσεις την πανοραμική θέα που προσφέρει στο Βόσπορο και την Αγία Σοφιά.
Αν πάλι δεν έχεις ιδιαίτερη υπομονή, σου προτείνουμε να απολαύσεις ένα ποτό με
θέα τον πύργο σε κάποιο από τα γύρω μαγαζιά.

Σε
αυτή την όμορφη συνοικία αξίζει να περπατήσεις και να θαυμάσεις, μεταξύ άλλων και
το Πατριαρχείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, που βρίσκεται εκεί από το 1601.
Ενώ στο παρελθόν είχε αναπτυχθεί μία επιφανής ελληνική κοινότητα, σήμερα θα
δεις κυρίως εγκαταλελειμμένα σπίτια ή σπίτια που κυρίως ζουν μετανάστες. Βέβαια
στην περιοχή θα βρεις αρκετά όμορφα καφέ με ζωντανά χρώματα που θα σου
τραβήξουν την προσοχή, την γειτονιά Μπαλάτ αλλά και τη Μεγάλη του Γένους Σχολή.
Η γειτονιά Μπαλάτ είναι το πιο πολύχρωμο μέρος της πόλης, το πιο ινσταγκραμικό.
Το λέμε αυτό γιατί εκεί θα φωτογραφηθείς σε πλακώστροτους δρόμους με φόντο
πολύχρωμα ροζ, κίτρινα και κόκκινα σπίτια. Η Μεγάλη του Γένους Σχολή είναι ένα
πανεπιστήμιο του 1454 στο οποίο πολλοί Έλληνες επιφανείς και αρχιεπίσκοποι αλλά
και κάποιοι Τούρκοι αποφοίτησαν από αυτή. Αν και άλλαξε πολλές φορές τοποθεσία,
πλέον βρίσκεται και αυτό στην περιοχή φανάρι και λειτουργεί ως σχολείο
δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης.

Κλειστές λαϊκές αγορές

Μην
παραλείψεις να αφιερώσεις χρόνο και να περπατήσεις στις διάφορες αγορές της
Πόλης. Σου προτείνουμε μια επίσκεψη στην αιγυπτιακή αγορά (Misir Carsisi), στο μεγάλο παζάρι (Grand bazar) και αν σε βγάλει ο δρόμος στις διάφορες κλειστές λαϊκές
αγορές της Πόλης. Θα αντικρίσεις ολόκληρους πάγκους γεμάτους από μυρωδάτα μπαχαρικά
όπως πάπρικα, μπούκοβο, κάρι, διάφορα είδη τσαγιού αλλά και τοπικά γλυκίσματα
όπως λουκούμια, σιροπιαστά και σουτζούκια. Είναι πραγματικά εντυπωσιακός ο
τρόπος που τα έχουν τοποθετημένα στους πάγκους και αν καταφέρεις να φύγεις
χωρίς να έχεις αγοράσει ή δοκιμάσει κάτι από όλα αυτά τότε είναι πραγματικά
άξιο απορίας. Η αιγυπτιακή αγορά είναι σχετικά μικρή και έχει κατά κύριο λόγο
φαγητά και μπαχαρικά αλλά η Grand Bazar είναι τόσο μεγάλη που
έχει ό,τι μπορείς να φανταστείς. Είναι σχεδόν σίγουρο πως θα χαθείς και θα
καταλήξεις να αναρωτιέσαι αν έχεις ξαναπεράσει από τους ίδιους &nbsp;διαδρόμους. Τουλάχιστον εμείς το πάθαμε.

Φυσικά
για να πεις ότι έζησα την πόλη είναι απαραίτητη μία βόλτα στο λιμάνι της. Μια
περιοχή γεμάτη με πολύ κόσμο όπου έρχονται οι ψαράδες και πουλάν τις ψαριές τους.
Εκεί μπορείς να δοκιμάσεις το γνωστό street food balik ekmek, το οποίο είναι φρέσκο ψάρι σε ψωμάκι με μαρούλι και
κρεμμύδι-ακούγεται περίεργο αλλά είναι πεντανόστιμο – αλλά και να πάρεις το
καραβάκι για μια υπέροχη βαρκάδα στο Βόσπορο. Δεν ξέρουμε γιατί αλλά η αύρα του
Βοσπόρου είναι μοναδική. Θα σου προτείναμε να ξεκινήσεις λίγο πριν δύσει ο
ήλιος. Το σκηνικό που δημιουργείται&nbsp; με
το πέταγμα των γλάρων δίπλα από τις ψαριές, την Αγιά Σοφιά στο βάθος αλλά και
την παρακολούθηση όλης της Πόλης μέσα από το καράβι είναι μοναδικό.

Η
Κωνσταντινούπολη είναι ένας προορισμός που φημίζεται για την κουζίνα του. Θα
γευτείς αλμυρά πιάτα που πίστεψε μας θα τα θυμάσαι για μια ζωή. Εδώ να πούμε όμως
πως πρέπει να είσαι προσεκτικός γιατί αν και η ανατολίτικη κουζίνα είναι πολύ
νόστιμη, είναι και πολύ βαριά λόγω των έντονων μπαχαρικών της. Γι’ αυτό, καλό
είναι να προτιμήσεις μαγαζιά που είναι δοκιμασμένα για να μην έχεις διάφορες στομαχικές
ή εντερικές διαταραχές. Παρακάτω σας παρουσιάζουμε τα μαγαζιά που πήγαμε εμείς,
δοκιμάσαμε και μείναμε πολύ ευχαριστημένοι. 

Θα το βρεις χωμένο σε κάποιο στενό της istiklal στον 4ο όροφο δίπλα από ένα μίνι μάρκετ. Θα
απολαύσεις τις υπέροχες γεύσεις που μαγειρεύουν και σίγουρα θα φύγεις
χορτασμένος και ικανοποιημένος. Μπορεί ο χώρος να μην είναι στυλάτος και
ιδιαίτερα διακοσμημένος, είναι όμως πολύ καθαρός. Είναι τόσο οικογενειακό το
περιβάλλον που αισθάνεσαι λες και είσαι καλεσμένος σε σπίτι και δοκιμάζεις την
τοπική κουζίνα. Για να έχεις μια πιο ολοκληρωμένη γευστική εικόνα διάλεξε την
ποικιλία που υπάρχει στο μενού και πίστεψε μας, θα φύγεις με τις καλύτερες
εντυπώσεις.

Εδώ θα βρεις φαγητά από την Αντιόχεια (Antakya), μιας περιοχής με πλούσια κουζίνα που έχει επιρροές από
αραβικά και τούρκικα στοιχεία. Όσα πιάτα γευτήκαμε ήταν πεντανόστιμα και είναι
ο λόγος που σου προτείνουμε το μαγαζί. Θα χάσεις αν δεν δοκιμάσεις το λουκάνικο
με χούμους. Λίγο βαρύ για το στομάχι, αλλά αλήθεια δε θα θες να τελειώσει. 

Πρόκειται για ένα εστιατόριο, σε ένα όμορφο διακοσμημένο
χώρο, τόσο εσωτερικά όσο και εξωτερικά και σε μία πολύ ωραία γειτονιά με θέα
την Αγια Σοφιά. Οπότε από άποψη τοποθεσίας δεν θα μπορούσε παρά να πρόκειται
για το απόλυτο εστιατόριο. Εκτός από το χώρο όμως έχει και πολύ ωραίο φαγητό. Όλα
είναι πεντανόστιμα και καλομαγειρεμένα και το προσωπικό πολύ ευγενικό. Αξίζει
την επίσκεψη σου.

Ένα ξεχωριστό καφέ - βιβλιοπωλείο μέσα σ’ ένα από τα
πολλά στενά της istiklal. Η ιδιοκτήτρια είναι Ελληνίδα της Κωνσταντινούπολης και
μιλάει πολύ καλά ελληνικά. Όσο για το μαγαζί είναι ένα πολύ ήσυχο μέρος που
μπορείς να πιείς παραδοσιακό τούρκικο καφέ (είναι σαν το δικό μας τον
ελληνικό), να δοκιμάσεις εναλλακτικά πιάτα με επιρροές από την ελληνική και την
τούρκικη κουζίνα και να χαλαρώσεις ψάχνοντας τα βιβλία του μαγαζιού.

Ένα σύγχρονο cocktail μπαρ που θα βρεις
αμέτρητα κοκτέιλ εκτός από τα κλασσικά. Ζήτησε τη βοήθεια του μπάρμαν,
περιέγραψε του τις γεύσεις που προτιμάς και άφησε τον να δημιουργήσει ένα
κοκτέιλ μόνο για σένα. Αν πάλι φοβάσαι τα πειράματα, διάλεξε κάποιο από αυτά
του καταλόγου που επίσης είναι μοναδικά, αλλά τουλάχιστον εξηγούν τα συστατικά
τους.

Τι θα έλεγες
για έναν καφέ σ ένα μαγαζί με μια άκρως χαλαρωτική ατμόσφαιρα; Ο λόγος για το Müz, ένα
εντελώς διαφορετικό μαγαζί για τα δεδομένα της Πόλης στο οποίο, εκτός από πολύ
ωραίο καφέ και μεγάλη ποικιλία τσαγιών, θα έχεις τη δυνατότητα να μελετήσεις ή
και να αγοράσεις τα πολλά φυτά και κεραμικά που διαθέτει. Αν και η τιμές είναι
λίγο τσιμπημένες, αξίζει μία επίσκεψη. Πίστεψε μας, θα χαλαρώσεις και θα συνεχίσεις
με άλλο αέρα. Το περιβάλλον είναι ιδανικό.

Η
Κωνσταντινούπολη, εκτός από την μυρωδάτη και νόστιμη κουζίνα της, φημίζεται και
για τα γλυκά της. Αν δεν το ξέρεις θα το καταλάβεις από τη μυρωδιά του βουτύρου
που υπάρχει στην ατμόσφαιρα, η οποία θα σου σπάσει τη μύτη προσκαλώντας σε
συνεχώς σε κάποιο από τα μαγαζιά. Αν είσαι λάτρης των σιροπιαστών και των
λουκουμιών τότε είσαι στο σωστό μέρος. Αν πάλι όχι, μία δοκιμή μπορεί να σε
πείσει για το αντίθετο. Ποτέ μη λες ποτέ!

Χωρίς πολλά λόγια εδώ θα φας τον καλύτερο μπακλαβά απ’
όλη την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Δίπλα από τον Πύργο του Γαλατά θα συναντήσεις το πιο
γνωστό μαγαζί και θα απολαύσεις τον παραδοσιακό τούρκικο μπακλαβά. Και το λέμε
αυτό γιατί δεν είναι σαν τον ελληνικό, στην Τουρκία χρησιμοποιούν σιρόπι
ζάχαρης και φιστίκι Αιγίνης αντί για μέλι και καρύδι.

<a></a>Και
εδώ θα απολαύσεις όλων των ειδών τα σιροπιαστά, με ή χωρίς φιστίκι, με ή χωρίς
σοκολάτα, με ή χωρίς αμύγδαλο. Δεν είναι το πιο γνωστό, όμως εμείς δοκιμάσαμε
στο μαγαζί της istiklal και μείναμε&nbsp; πολύ
ευχαριστημένοι.

Μετά από πολύ
ψάξιμο καταλήξαμε να πάμε σε αυτό το μαγαζί για δοκιμή κιουνεφέ (σαν ζύμη σιμιγδαλιού
με στρώσεις τυριού σιροπιασμένη) και κατμέρ (σιροπιασμένο φύλλο γεμιστό με
φυστίκι Αιγίνης και τυρί). Τα συνδυάζουν σερβίροντας τα ταυτόχρονα με γάλα και
κομμάτια πορτοκαλιού για την απόλυτη γεύση. Μη ρωτήσεις γιατί, απλώς έλα και θα
καταλάβεις. Οι άνθρωποι ξέρουν πολλά…

Εδώ θα γευτείς
το καλύτερο προφιτερόλ που έχεις φάει ποτέ χωρίς υπερβολή. Αυτό το γλυκό το
φτιάχνουν σ’ ένα μαγαζί-παραδοσιακό κτίριο που βρίσκεται λίγα μόλις βήματα από
την istiklal, με τον ίδιο τρόπο όπως το 1944 όταν και άνοιξε το ζαχαροπλαστείο.
Ακόμη&nbsp; θα βρεις και άλλα γλυκά εκτός από
προφιτερόλ καθώς και χειροποίητες δικές τους σοκολάτες. Συνδύασέ το με τσάι ή
παραδοσιακό τούρκικο καφέ και απόλαυσε το προφιτερόλ σου σε κάποιο από τα λίγα
τραπεζάκια που έχει στο εσωτερικό του.

Dondurma στα τούρκικα σημαίνει παγωτό. Φτιάχνεται από γίδινο
γάλα, ζάχαρη, σαλέπι και μαστίχα και προέρχεται από το Καχραμάνμαρας, μία
περιοχή στα βάθη της νοτιοανατολικής Τουρκίας. Το παραδοσιακό παγωτό σερβίρεται
στους πάγκους μέσα από μια αστεία διαδικασία σερβιρίσματος που σου κάνουν οι
πωλητές καθώς σου το ετοιμάζουν. Βάζουν το παγωτό στο χωνάκι και εσύ νομίζεις
ότι αυτό ήταν, αλλά όχι. Τουλάχιστον 3 λεπτά περιμένεις με το χέρι απλωμένο για
να το πάρεις και όταν τελειώσει όλο το show μόνο τότε μπορείς να
το απολαύσεις. Μην περιμένεις να μείνεις με το στόμα ανοιχτό από την υπέροχη
γεύση του, ωστόσο η διαδικασία αξίζει την αναμονή. Αν δεν σηκώνεις από πλάκα,
καλύτερα να μην δοκιμάσεις την τύχη σου. 

Δύο ακόμη
εμπειρίες που πρέπει να δοκιμάσεις για να νιώσεις ολοκληρωμένος από το ταξίδι
σου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη είναι ο ναργιλές και το χαμάμ.

Αυτό το μαγαζί επιλέξαμε εμείς για ναργιλέ μετά από
αρκετό ψάξιμο και ακόμα μας έχει μείνει στο μυαλό η εξυπηρέτηση και το πόσο
φιλικός ήταν ο υπάλληλος. Βρίσκεται κοντά στην Αγιά Σοφιά, οπότε γιατί να μην
το συνδυάσεις με ένα δείπνο στο εστιατόριο House of medusa; Είναι καθαρά για ναργιλέ και μπορείς να δοκιμάσεις μία
από τις πολλές γεύσεις που σου προσφέρει. Μήλο, λεμόνι, διάφορες μίξεις, με ή
χωρίς αλκοόλ. Πραγματικά υπέροχο για κλείσιμο ημέρας ή για ένα ενδιάμεσο
διάλλειμα χαλάρωσης.

Δε θα μπορούσαμε να μην προτείνουμε το μαγαζί που
δοκιμάσαμε γιατί φύγαμε τόσο ξεκούραστοι και ανανεωμένοι. Το Aga Hamami λοιπόν είναι ένα παραδοσιακό χαμάμ που λειτουργεί με τον
ίδιο τρόπο από το 1454. Μέσα θα δεις μάρμαρα παντού, υλικό που δεν συγκρατεί τα
μικρόβια και θα λάβεις μία ιδιαίτερη περιποίηση λες και ζεις σε άλλες εποχές. Νιώθεις

Which
man in the world, especially if it is about a Greek man, would say no to a trip
to Constantinople?

It
is a city full of aromas, tastes, colours and a lot of history. An intersection
of cultures and a city functioning as a connection between Europe and Asia, as
it is built on both continents, with Bosphorus being the river that separates
them or connects them, someone would say. The Ottomans conquered the City
(Pole) in 1453 and since then its universal name became Istanbul, however, for
the Greeks will always remain Constantinople. It is the biggest city of Turkey
and constitutes the economic, cultural and historical center of it. A city that
offers you a familiar sensation, a city that its aura can travel you in faraway
places.

If
you come to the historical capital of Turkey you ‘ll walk down Taksim square
and Istiklal – the most central pedestrian area – but you ‘ll also taste the
local cuisine, which is delicious despite the big amount of spices that contains.
You will eat local desserts at least once a day, because you can’t resist them
and you will buy spices, lokums, souvenirs and everything else you can imagine
in one of the many outdoor markets you’ll come across there. Of course, you
will admire Ayia Sofia (Ayasofya) and many other landmarks.

All
the aforementioned and many others, are calling you and awaiting for you to
make a unique trip. Let’s meet the City of cities, Constantinople.

It’s impossible to not pass by this square
at least once a day. Whichever street you may choose to walk down from, you
will end up either beginning or finishing your walk from there. It is a
reference point of the city and is the biggest and most well-known square.
Circumferentially, there are various local stores and from here, the Istiklal
caddesi begins, the pedestrian road of 1.5km. Two main points are: the
monument-symbol of Turkish Democracy in honor of the people who took part and
aided in the establishment of modern Turkey and the new mosque, whose
construction was finished in 2021.

The
busiest pedestrian roan of the city begins from Taksim square and ends up to
the port. Here, you will find everything. Places for food, coffee, pastry
shops, souvenirs but also places for currency exchange. It is advised to know
in advance the exchange value (parity) between the Turkish lira and euro, as
not all of them are trustworthy and you might end up being deceived. Also, this
is the point from which one of the oldest tram of the world passes by every
day. The red retro wagon of the tram with the little “stowaways” hanging on the
back of the wagon, crosses the pedestrian road daily since 1875 ringing the
famous bell to warn the pedestrians of its arrival.

Moreover,
you will come across with a man dressed in white rotating himself and dancing
the Dervish dance. This dance is the way by which the believers come closer to
God. They are spinning around themselves with the palm of the right hand facing
the sky and the left one facing the ground. The fact that they can spin for
that long without getting dizzy is really impressive.

Moreover,
as you walk down the streets of the City you will hear many times the Muezzin
from the megaphones, he is the one calling the believers to prayer. It is the
time that most of the people stop their on spot occupations and pray or make
for the mosques to pray.

However,
we have something extra for you, it’s the place where magic is revealed when we
find ourselves in a new city. Walk down the central streets but don’t hesitate
to wander around the narrow alleys (sokak, as they are called) of Istiklal. You
will find countless stores hidden in there, maybe unappreciated, as the tourist
don’t prefer to visit them. Nevertheless, be certain that even if you get lost
you will definitely find something interesting. The images you see, far away
from the touristic places and noise, will be the ones that will create your
memories during your trip and make you realize in a better way the culture, the
way of life and the daily routine of the locals.

Of
course, there is no Constantinople without Ayia Sofia. This historical temple
was built in 537 A.C. and despite the hardships (earthquakes, lootings and
fires) is still there and stands straight. An imposing temple of which the way
of construction is being remembered until today. A temple that the Ottomans envied
a lot, that’s why they converted it into a mosque after the Fall of the City.
That’s also the reason why they tried to built something similar right across
it, the Blue Mosque. Ayia Sofia belongs to the list of the UNESCO monuments since
1985 and was running as a museum until 2020, when it was decided to be
converted to a mosque again.

The
pride of the Turks, the one that was built right across Ayia Sofia in an
attempt of resembling it. Blue because of the color of the building, it forms
the place of worship of the Muslim believers in a room where internally there
isn’t any kind of decoration. You will see the believers to take off their
shoes outside of the mosque, wash their face and feet at a specially designed
place and move for the internal part of the temple where they pray kneeled on
the floor which is totally covered by moquette. At the moment of the pray, the
mosque is not open to the tourists. However, it was of a bad impression for us
the unpleasant smell in the place because of the removal of the shoes.

This
spectacular palace is the most impressive palace of Turkey as, apart from its
architecture, it constitutes also an open gate to Bosphorus. Both the interior
of the palace, with 285 rooms, 46 halls, 6 hammams, 68 bathrooms and the
exterior part with very meticulous gardens are the ones that will fascinate and
impress you. The palace was the home of the sultans of the Ottoman empire and
is a real gem which invites you to discover it.

It
is located at a region with vivid life due to the many stores that surround it.
It is an impressive attraction, near the port, visible from many sides and as
the night falls the spectacle becomes even more beautiful. If you manage to
reach the top, as the waiting line is huge, you will enjoy the panoramic view
to Bosphorus and Ayia Sofia that the tower offers. However, if you aren’t
particularly patient, we suggest you to enjoy a drink with a view to the Tower
in one of the places there.

In
this beautiful district it is worth walking around and admire, among others,
the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which is located there since 1601. While
in the past a prominent Greek community had been created there, today you will
mostly see neglected houses or houses where mostly immigrants live. In the
region you will also find a lot of nice coffee places with vivid colors that
will grab your attention, Balat neighborhood but also the Phanar Greek Orthodox
College. The Balat neighborhood is the most colourful place of the city, the most
instagramic one. We are keen to say that this is the place where you will
photoshoot yourself with a background of colourful pink, yellow and red houses.
The Greek Orthodox College is a University of 1454 from which many prominent
Greeks and archbishops, but also some Turks, have graduated. Even though its location
has changed many times, it is now located also in Phanar neighborhood and is
running as a secondary education school.

Don’t
miss to spend some time and walk in the various markets of the City. We suggest
you to pay a visit at the Egyptian Market (Misir Carsisi), the Grand bazar and
if your path leads you there, you can also visit the indoor local markets of
the City. You will come across with entire benches full of fragrant spices such
as paprika, chili flakes, curry, different types of tea but also local desserts
such as lokums, syrupy delights and sujuks (dry sausage). It is truly
impressive to see the way that these delights are placed and ordered on the
benches and if you manage to get away without buying any of them, it would be
worth questioning. The Egyptian market is relatively small and is mostly
trading food and spices, while the Grand bazar is huge and includes everything
that may come to your mind. It is of outmost certainty that you will get
yourself lost and you will end up wondering whether you have passed from the
same corridors. At least this is what happened to us.

Of course, in order to be able to say that I’ve “felt”
the city’s vibes well enough, a walk down the port is absolutely necessary. A region
full of people where the fishermen come and sell their hauls. You can try there the well-known street food “balik ekmem” which is
fresh fish in a bun with lettuce and onion – sounds weird but is delicious –
but also grab the boat for a beautiful boat ride in Bosphorus. We don’t know
why, but the aura of Bosphorus is unique. We would suggest you to begin with
the ride a little bit before the sunset. The scenery that is created along with
the seagulls flying around the fishermen’s hauls, Ayia Sofia in the background
but also the view of the entire City from the boat is truly unique.

Constantinople
is a destination which is famous for its cuisine. You will taste savory dishes that,
believe us, you will remember for life. We have to say here that you will have
to pay extra attention because, despite the fact that the oriental cuisine is
very tasty, is also very “heavy” due to its intense use of spices. For this
reason, it is advised to prefer places that are tried and tested in order for you to avoid having
gastrointestinal complications. Below we present to you the places we visited,
tried and satisfied us.

You will find it nestled in one of the sokaks of Istiklal on the 4th floor
next to a mini market. You will enjoy the wonderful tastes that they cook and you will leave
the place full and
satisfied, for sure. It might be that the place is not that stylish and
specially decorated, but it is very clean for sure. The environment is so familial
that makes you feel as if you were invited to a warm home and you taste the
local cuisine. In order for you to have a complete view of their menu, we
suggest you to try the mix that is on the menu and trust us, you will leave the
place with the best of impressions.

Here, you will find food from Antioch (Antakya), a region with rich cuisine which is influenced by Arabic and Turkish elements. All the dishes we tasted were delicious and this
is the reason why we suggest you this specific place. You will miss a lot if you
don’t try the sausage with hummus. It is a little bit heavy for your stomach, but
honestly, you will wish for it not to finish.

It is about a restaurant, in a nicely decorated place, both internally and externally, in a very nice neighbourhood with
a view to Ayia Sofia. So,
from a location perspective, it couldn’t be but a perfect restaurant. Apart from the place itself, there is also very nice food. Everything is delicious and well-cooked and the personnel is
very polite. It is worth your visit.

A special coffee place – bookstore in one of the many sokaks of Istiklal. The owner is Greek living in Constantinople and
speaks Greek very fluently. As for the place, it is a very quiet place where
you can drink traditional Turkish coffee (it is the same as our Greek coffee),
try “alternative” dishes with influences from
the Greek and
Turkish cuisine and relax looking for different books in the place.

A modern cocktail bar where you will find countless cocktails apart from the normal
ones. Ask for help from the barman, describe the tastes you prefer and let him
create a cocktail only for you. However,
if you’re afraid of
experimenting
with these kind of cocktails,
choose one from the menu which are also unique, but at least, they include a
description of the ingredients.

What about a coffee in a place with an absolutely relaxing atmosphere?
It is about the Müz,
a completely different place in comparison with the
other places in the City in which, apart from the very nice coffee and great
tea varieties, you will have the chance to study or buy many plants and
ceramics that are available there. Despite the fact that the value is a little bit pricey,
it’s worth paying a visit. Believe us, you will relax and continue your discovery
with a different mood. The environment is ideal.

Constantinople, apart from its fragrant and delicious cuisine, is also well-known for
its desserts. If you don’t know it already, you will understand it from the
smell of butter that wafts on the atmosphere, which will enchant you,
constantly calling you to visit one of the places. If you are a lover of the
syrupy delights and the lokums, then you are in the right place. If
you
‘re not, then maybe a taste of it might convince you for the opposite. Never
say never!

Not saying much, here you will eat the best baklava in the entire Constantinople. Next to the Galata Tower you will come
across with the most famous place and you ‘ll enjoy the traditional Turkish
baklava. We ‘re talking about the Turkish baklava as it’s not the same as the
Greek one, in Turkey they use sugar sirup and pistachio instead of honey and
walnuts.

You
will also enjoy here all kinds of syrupy delights, with or without pistachio, with or without chocolate, with or without almond. It’s not&nbsp;
the most well-known place, but we tried the corresponding place in Istiklal
and we left very satisfied from there.

After
a lot of searching we ended up visiting this place to try künefe (it is like semolina dough with layers of cheese embedded in sirup) and katmer (syrupy “phyllo” dough stuffed with
pistachio and cheese). They combine them with served milk and pieces of orange
for the ultimate combination of flavor. Don’t ask why, just go there and you will
find all answers to your questions. These people, simply, know how to do it…

In this place you will taste the best profiterole that you have ever tasted, not exaggerating. This dessert is being made in a place-traditional
building which is located only a few steps away from Istiklal, the same way was
made back in 1944 when the pastry shop first opened its doors. Moreover, you will
also find other desserts apart from profiterole as well as their own handmade
chocolates. Combine it with tea or traditional Turkish coffee and enjoy your
profiterole in one of the few tables that exist inside the place.

Dondurma in
Turkish
means ice-cream. It is made of goat milk, sugar, orchis and mastic and
is originally derived from Kahramanmaras, a region deep in south-east Turkey.
The traditional ice-cream is served on the bench after a funny procedure that
the sellers do while they prepare your ice-cream. They put the ice-cream on the
cone and you think “that was it”, but no. You might
wait for at least 3 minutes with your hand open to take it and when the whole
show is over only then you are able to enjoy it. Don’t expect it to leave you
speechless by its taste, but the whole procedure is worth waiting for. If you
don’t like these kind of jokes-shows, you better not challenge your luck with
this one.

Two
more experiences that you have to try in order to feel complete after your
journey in Constantinople is hookah
(shisha) and hammam.

We chose this place to have hookah after a lot of searching
and it remains still in our mind for its service and the friendliness of the
employee there. It is located close to Ayia Sofia, so why not combine it with a
dinner in the restaurant of House of medusa? It is purely made for hookah and you
can try one of the many flavours that offers you. Apple,
lemon,
various
mixes,
with or without alcohol. It is truly wonderful to close off your day or for an intermediate relaxing break.

We couldn’t miss suggesting the place we tried because we left from there relaxed and refreshed. The
Aga Hamami is a traditional hammam that is running the same way since 1454. On the
inside, you will see marbles, a material that doesn’t sustain the
microorganisms and you will receive special care as if you ‘re living in other
eras. You will feel at least like a “pasha”. The only thing you have to do is
let yourself at the hands of the specialists there and enjoy it. Sauna, bath from
them on your whole body simulating the caring sensation of the old era and, to finish
with, massage. Do you need us to tell you even more?

Constantinople
is a dream-city, a city that will always have something else to give you. The
city in which you ‘ll always taste, feel and as many times as you might visit
it, you will leave with the equal amount of memories and beautiful images,
enough to whisper in your ear, when you are going to see her again.
